For 31 years, a trip down the Virginia Beach Oceanfront in December meant crawling past the lights in a car. This year, that tradition changed. If you grew up with it, or you are new here and just heard about it, here is what moved, where the best lights are now, and a city-by-city plan for the next two months.
The Big Change: Lights at the Beach Became a Walk
According to WHRO, the Holiday Lights at the Beach show closed at the Oceanfront after 31 years. In its place is a new walkable show called the Holiday Trail of Lights, set on the Nature Trail at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. It runs Friday, November 20, 2026 through Sunday, January 3, 2027.
Why the move? In March, WAVY reported that city officials said the Boardwalk is mainly a seawall and could no longer handle the heavy vehicle traffic the drive-through show required. The new version is on foot instead of in the car.
Tickets are timed and sold through BeachEventsVB.com. WHRO listed adult tickets at $19 to $22 and children at $12 to $15, with discounts for military families on Monday nights and for Aquarium members. Prices were from the September announcement, so confirm at checkout.
The Season at a Glance
Screenshot this one. Every date below is from the sources listed at the bottom of the post.
- Nov. 6: Garden of Lights opens at the Norfolk Botanical Garden.
- Nov. 11: Tidewater Veterans Day Parade, Virginia Beach Oceanfront, 9:00 AM.
- Nov. 13: WinterFest on the Wisconsin begins at Nauticus in Norfolk.
- Nov. 20: Holiday Trail of Lights opens at the Virginia Aquarium.
- Nov. 21: Grand Illumination Parade in Norfolk at 7:00 PM, plus Whimsical Winter Wonderland in Hampton.
- Nov. 26: Celebration in Lights opens at Newport News Park.
- Nov. 27: Skate the Riverwalk opens in Norfolk, and Suffolk's Festival of Lights begins.
- Dec. 5: Hampton Holly Days Parade, and the Yule Log Bonfire & Christmas Marketplace in Norfolk.
- Dec. 12: Downtown Hampton Lighted Boat Parade.
Notice how many of these start the same week as Thanksgiving. If you have family coming into town, that stretch from Thanksgiving weekend through the first weekend of December is the easiest time to knock out two or three in a row without anyone getting tired of the cold.
More in Virginia Beach
Veterans Day comes before the holiday rush. The Tidewater Veterans Day Parade steps off at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, November 11, from 16th Street and Atlantic Avenue at the Oceanfront, and it ends at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial for a ceremony. The parade and ceremony are free, per Visit Virginia Beach. If you are a military family new to the area, it is one of the best ways to see how much this community shows up for its own.
Norfolk: Lights, a Parade and a Skating Rink
Norfolk packs the most into the smallest area. All of the following are from VisitNorfolk's 2026 holiday list, published October 22:
- Garden of Lights at the Norfolk Botanical Garden runs November 6, 2026 through January 3, 2027.
- WinterFest on the Wisconsin at Nauticus runs November 13 through January 2, 2027.
- Grand Illumination Parade is Saturday, November 21, at 7:00 PM in Downtown Norfolk.
- Skate the Riverwalk opens November 27 near the Half Moone Cruise Terminal at Nauticus.
- Holiday Yule Log Bonfire & Christmas Marketplace is Saturday, December 5, noon to 8:00 PM at Town Point Park. It is free.
- The Riverwalk light walk, from Town Point Park to the Pagoda, is free and listed as nightly.
Hampton and Newport News
Visit Hampton's 2026 holiday guide lists a Whimsical Winter Wonderland on Saturday, November 21, from noon to 5:00 PM (free). The Hampton Holly Days Parade steps off at 5:00 PM on Saturday, December 5, in Downtown Hampton. A week later, on Saturday, December 12, the free Downtown Hampton Lighted Boat Parade takes over the waterfront.
In Newport News, the Celebration in Lights drive-through at Newport News Park is listed by the city's Parks and Recreation department for November 26, 2026 through January 1, 2027, from 5:30 to 10:00 PM nightly. The listing says more details are still to come, so check the city page for admission and any changes.
Suffolk: A Free One Worth the Drive
The Festival of Lights at Sleepy Hole Park in Suffolk is free for all ages, according to Visit Suffolk. It runs from 5:00 to 9:00 PM on select nights starting November 27, and it is closed December 24 and 25. On Saturday, December 19, the park hosts a walk-through night that is closed to vehicles, so bring walking shoes.
Plan Your Night Like a Local
A few things I would do whether I was visiting or living here:
- Pick one big event per weekend. Parades and tree lightings draw crowds, and a relaxed evening beats a packed calendar.
- Buy timed tickets early. The Aquarium trail uses timed entry, so waiting until the last weekend of December can mean fewer choices.
- Mix free and paid. Norfolk's Riverwalk and Suffolk's Festival of Lights cost nothing, which leaves room in the budget for the ticketed shows.
- Dress for the water. Most of these sit on a river, a bay or the ocean, and it feels colder at night than the forecast says.
I keep a running list of what is coming up on the Events Hub, and you can always find everything on jruffrealty.com.
A Bonus for Anyone Thinking About a Move
Driving to see lights is a good way to see neighborhoods you would not otherwise visit after dark. If you are thinking about moving here, or across town, pay attention to the street you are on: how it feels at night, how busy it is, and how far you drove from home. The neighborhood pages, city guides and our military and PCS hub are good companions for that kind of scouting.
